Cantor Roher was invested as a cantor on May 22, 2005, and began serving the Temple in July 2005. She received her cantorial training in Jerusalem and New York City at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Sacred Music and was a member of the first class to complete the new five-year program of study. During her schooling she served on a committee to create spiritual and innovative worship in the school, and she received awards in the areas of Torah chanting, traditional chazzanut, and liturgy, among others. She also served during this time as Student Cantor at Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City, where she supervised the B’nai Mitzvah program, directed the adult volunteer choir, and created many new worship experiences for families and young adults.
Cantor Roher is a native of New York City. While growing up in New York she studied classical piano at The Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division. She studied vocal performance at The Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from The Hartt School of Music, at the University of Hartford in Hartford, CT. She received her Master of Sacred Music Degree from The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Sacred Music. Jen has taught voice, piano, music theory, and ear training to both children and adults. She has also performed, directed, and choreographed for musical theater productions, and taught music at a special education school.
